This unit is common core aligned and chock full of everything you need to launch a non- fiction writing unit.

Next comes the "sequential" chapter. After my revelations, I asked my students: I handed out highlighters and asked students to highlight important information in a short paragraph and cross off interesting or irrelevant information code the text.
I believe that in order to best understand non-fiction, readers must learn to decode its structure and use its features efficiently. Coding the text can be used a number of different ways. Students chose a chapter from their table of contents that would be best suited to a sequential structure.

They are really loving this unit Then after much discussion and deliberation, they chose a topic they knew a lot about, cared about and would be interesting to others.
Ask students to contrast the books making notes on how they are different.
